Why Living with the In-Laws Is Actually Costing You Money

Why Christians should not live with their in-laws in the same house

-Here is why Christians should not live with their in-laws in the same house.

Matthew 19:3-6 New King James Version
3 The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?”
4 And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’

5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?
6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

This Biblical principle was meant to prevent conflicts as results from different viewpoints, different lifestyles, differences in values and principles when it come to training children, and generational gaps between the in-laws and their married children.

Christians should NOT live with their in-laws in the same house or under the same room.  Your in-laws or parents might often want more control of the house, and one of them or both of them might want to spoil your children and coddle your children too much.   In addition, your in-laws or parents might not be true Christians, and they might often want more and more control of the house, including how to train children, how to educate children, how to spend money, what foods to buy, etc.

In Matthew 19:5, Jesus said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?

Jesus was clearly against living with in-laws.  Living with in-laws will indeed create lots of conflicts and tensions, plus most likely everyone has different daily schedules, routines, viewpoints, and habits.

Living with in-laws will indeed create lots of conflicts and tensions, even if it’s just temporary for a few weeks.  (I learned this myself)

The exception would be if the in-laws, you and your wife, and the kids are all God-fearing Christians that strictly follow God’s word and God’s moral law regarding family and how to train children. And, you have a big enough house so that everyone can have their own private space or own room.

If you have elderly in-laws that are sick or need lots of care and help, then pray about it.  Each family’s situation is different, and it might be a good idea to have your in-laws live close to you rather than to have them live WITH you in the same house.

This way, they are close enough for you to take care of them while you and your wife could have your own private space and private time.

On the other hand, if you are able financially, do remember to help out or support your in-laws financially if they need financial help.  Remember the words of Jesus in Matt 15:4-6, and that Christians should support their elderly parents financially if they need financial help.

Matthew 15:4-6 King James Version

In addition, remember to love all members of your family with true love, faith, patience, kindness, forgiveness, peace, mutual respect, and your prayers.

Below is our teaching on what true love is:

God’s love is a 2-way street, not a one way coddle!
