•  Luke 14:26-27 Contemporary English Version (best translation of Luke 14:26)
  

  “You cannot be my disciple, unless you love me more than you love your father and mother, your wife and children, and your brothers and sisters. You cannot come with Me(Jesus) unless you love Me more than you love your own life. You cannot be My disciple unless you carry your own cross and come with Me.”

• Luke 24:47 Jesus said, “and that repentance [necessary] for forgiveness of sins would be preached in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” (Luke 24:47 Amplified Bible)

Yes, Jesus really did say that “you cannot be a disciple/Christian unless you love Him more than you love your own life! 

And Luke 14:26 is probably the least preached verse in the whole Bible.

Luke 9:23-25 NKJV      Take Up the Cross and Follow Him
23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.
25 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?

a. deny self means to surrender your heart, mind, body to God, and to say no to self, selfishness, and sin. 

b.  Take up your cross daily means to surrender your life daily to Jesus.  To lose your life for Jesus’s sake means to surrender your old sinful life to Jesus.  It means to surrender the rest of your life to Jesus. 

Jesus said you cannot be a Christian unless you love Him more than your own life!
