God breaks the man he wants to use because pride cannot carry His glory and ego cannot bear His calling. The breaking strips away self-dependence so that only God remains.
Before God can use a man, he breaks him. Not to destroy him, but to strip away pride, comfort, and illusions until there’s nothing left to lean on but God himself. It’s in that breaking, in that crushing where ordinary men are transformed into vessels of extraordinary purpose. The breaking is not punishment.
When God breaks a man, it’s never random. It may feel crushing, confusing, even unfair. But it’s not punishment. It’s preparation. Think about it. Before a seed can grow, the ground must be broken open. Before a potter shapes clay, the clay must first be pressed and crushed. Moses was broken in the desert for 40 years before he could lead Israel.
Joseph was broken in a prison before he could rule in a palace. Even David was broken in caves, running for his life before he could sit on the throne. God breaks the man he wants to use because pride cannot carry his glory and ego cannot bear his calling. The breaking strips away self-dependence so that only God remains.
And it’s in that place, the place of surrender, where true power is born. Breaking produces humility. God cannot pour his power into a vessel that’s already full of self. That’s why breaking is necessary. It humbles us. Look at Peter. He was bold, confident, even arrogant at times. He swore he would never deny Jesus. But within hours, he failed. Not once, but three times.
That moment shattered him. He wept bitterly, broken by his own weakness.
But it was that very breaking that prepared him. After Pentecost, Peter stood not in his own strength, but in God’s, and 3,000 souls were saved in a single day.
